Kayaköy, Turkey

As long as 10,000 people lived in harmony within the abandoned village of Kayaköy, it was once a thriving community in southwest Turkey. In the 14th century, Greek Orthodox Christians and Muslims both built homes here, and the two groups lived side by side until the Greco-Turkish War in the 1920s led to most of the population being exiled. The forced exodus, along with a devastating earthquake in 1957, turned Kayaköy into a ghost town.. There are a few churches and several hundred homes standing in quiet defiance of the once peaceful society that once inhabited this hillside town

Teufelsberg, Berlin

Near bustling Berlin lies Teufelsberg, a Cold War listening station now abandoned. Station sits atop Devil’s Mountain, a 262-foot artificial hill covered with WWII rubble, which was once a Nazi military college.. In 1989, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the NSA abandoned the station on the mountain so they could eavesdrop on East Berlin.. It stands today as a graffiti-covered ruin above the city. Almost every day, historical tours allow visitors to see the radar domes and the city below
