The Island of the Dolls, Mexico

Even though Xochimilco is a World Heritage site (along with Mexico City, it is an excellent example of Aztec life), it is best known for its Isla de las Munecas, or the Island of the Dolls.. Located among the region’s canals, the site is famous for its hundreds of dolls, a few of which still have their parts attached, hanging from trees and scattered throughout the grounds.. Despite its appearance, the chinampa used to be the residence of Julian Santa Barrera, a now-deceased man from the Dominican Republic. The toys were collected and displayed in an effort to ward off evil spirits after Barrera discovered a dead girl’s body in a nearby canal. From the water, daring souls can hire a boat, convince the driver to visit the island, and marvel at the decaying house and dangling dolls.

Buzludzha Monument, Bulgaria

Buzludzha Monument was constructed by the Bulgarian communist regime toward the end of the Cold War as a prominent and official party headquarters. Its UFO-like design and red-star ceiling set the ambiance of many state functions, where Lenin and Marx posters and posters hung. In 1989, the monument was abandoned and closed to the public, so sneaky explorers were prevented from exploring its otherworldly dome.
