Houtouwan, China

Hutouwan is a former fishing village on Shengshan Island, about 87 miles southeast of Shanghai. This ghost town has been abandoned for several decades, but it isn’t your typical one.. Rather than dust and rubble, these buildings are covered in creeping ivy and lush vegetation, creating a spectacular, green landscape. Most of the village’s original residents moved inland in the early 1990s, but a few still live on the island, selling water to curious tourists.

Great Train Graveyard, Bolivia

A “cemetery” of abandoned and antique trains lies in the Uyuni region outside of the region’s salt flats and red lakes.. Uyuni’s transportation network was planning to be extended and additional train tracks built through the city in the early 19th century, but due to technical difficulties and tensions with local indigenous populations, the project was abandoned.. As the 1950s came along, the mines ran out of minerals, and the miners left town, leaving the equipment lying in the desert.. The Great Train Graveyard we see today is the result of time and salty winds corroding the trains
