There are 45 abandoned places around the world that will leave you awestruck and haunted at the same time.

Bodie, California

Bodie was once home to 10,000 people, but boomed in the 1870s and 1880s when gold was discovered in Mono Lake’s hills. The town, which is now a State Historic Park, has been preserved in its “arrested decay” — think tables with place settings and shops filled with supplies.

Power Plant IM, Belgium

As one of the largest coal-burning plants in Belgium during its heyday, the Power Plant IM in Charleroi cooled 480,000 gallons of water per minute with its massive cooling tower (pictured).. It is true that great power comes with great pollution, and this particular plant was responsible for almost 10 percent of the nation’s carbon dioxide emissions. In 2007, Greenpeace protested the site, resulting in its closure. The abandoned towers still provide plenty of eerily beautiful views even though they don’t provide electricity
