How weapon upgrades work

Upgrades are found at in-run upgrade stations and in town. Each tier can change the weapon's mechanics, not just its numbers — a katana tier might add a dash-slash, a greatsword tier might add a shockwave. Always read the next tier's description before committing; some tiers are side-grades for your playstyle.

Katana

Fast, skill-based, highest skill ceiling. Rewards perfect dodges with follow-up slash resets.

• Strengths: best DPS uptime, excellent with on-hit artifact builds.
• Weaknesses: short range, punishing if you mistime dodges.
• Key upgrades: dash-slash tier (mobility), crit tier (build-defining).
• Best builds: The Engine (attack speed + on-hit heal).

Sword & Shield

The beginner default — and the source of "why can't I get new weapons" frustration, because you start with it and progress is slow. It's a genuine jack-of-all-trades:

• Strengths: blocking, safe, forgiving parry.
• Weaknesses: modest damage, slow room clears.
• Key upgrades: block-return damage tier, shield-bash tier.
• Best builds: The Wall (DR + regen) for co-op tanking.

Greatsword

High burst, slow swings. The boss-killer — pairs with punish-window gameplay.

• Strengths: massive single-target damage, stagger.
• Weaknesses: slow, vulnerable during recovery.
• Key upgrades: shockwave tier, charge tier.
• Best builds: Glass Cannon (crit) for boss fights.

Staff

The caster option. "How to unlock new staff weapons" is a recurring community question — staffs unlock through the Sorcerer's quest line in Bunnyville (see walkthrough secrets).

• Strengths: range, AoE, elemental procs.
• Weaknesses: squishy, ammo/energy management.
• Best builds: chaos engine (chaos damage scaling).

Ranged weapons

Rare drops from specific events and the Sorcerer Shop. Keep distance, stack projectile artifacts. Best co-op support weapon when your teammates are melee.
