During the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the resort town of Varosha, once a popular beach getaway for stars like Brigitte Bardot, was abandoned.. Despite being located two miles from the UN buffer zone separating Greece and Turkey, residents never returned to the beachside resort. As tourism in Famagusta soars, Varosha remains abandoned, with model cars still in garages and clothing hanging in shops 40 years after it was evacuated.. Griffith Park Zoo, California

Griffith Park Zoo began its life in 1912 with 15 animals and big plans to become an important Los Angeles destination. As a result of several expansions and high tourist interest, the site closed in 1966 and the animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo.
